1999-Present INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA - Faculty; Pennsylvania/OSHA Consultation Program. - Indiana, PA 

Provides OSHA consultation services for private industry through a federal/state grant. Safety Sciences Department faculty position as an instructor for undergraduate/graduate safety curricula. 

1997-Present EVERGREEN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY, INC. - Indiana, PA 

Safety, health, and environmental consulting/training; OSHA 10hr. General Industry and Construction, HAZWOPER, and forklift certification. Expert/consultant for plaintiff and defense attorneys. OSHA consultation/site inspections, Phase I Environmental Assessments, Slip, Trip, & Fall incidents, and Defensive Driver training. Investigations of mudslides, floods, and erosion. 

Managed $30 million environmental remediation and complete demolition (1999-2001) of the last large steel mill in Pittsburgh’s city limit for LTV Steel Co., Cleveland, OH. 

1997. INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION - Monroeville, PA

(currently SHAW INFRASTRUCTURE) 


Corporate Health and Safety Manager for the Engineering, Construction, and Remediation Division. Responsibilities included home office support for all programs for private industry, government, military, and superfund projects. Most projects involved the drilling/core sampling, removal, encapsulation, stabilization, or incineration of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. Many of the military sites required the locating, excavating, and destruction of explosive ordnances. Support and direction provided for over thirty health and safety professionals assigned to field projects and other offices. Developed intern program for IUP safety science majors. Worked with case managers, Workers’ Compensation, and legal department. 

1994. ICF KAISER ENGINEERS, INC. - Pittsburgh, PA

1989-1994 Environmental Health and Safety Manager and Site Manager for the environmental site restoration, construction, and engineering division. Managed asbestos abatement, environmental drilling/remediation, and demolition of steel mills, coke plants, chemical plants, paper mills, aluminum smelting, and other various processing facilities. Included among the large steel facilities demolished were USX Duquesne Works, USX McKeesport National Tube Works, LTV Aliquippa Coke, LTV Donner-Hanna Coke in Buffalo, NY, and LTV Cleveland Coke. Managed the cleanup and demolition of the Fike Chemical Superfund Site in Nitro, WV, an infamous batch chemical plant that was built over a former ammunition plant. Responsible for weighing scrap metal/hazardous wastes that were shipped off-site. Conducted RI/FS sampling on 8 DEW line Radar Stations on Alaska’s north shore. 

Created bid packages, awarded bids, and assisted in qualification package development and marketing. Conducted Hazardous Waste Health and Safety Certification training. Wrote many Health and Safety Plans, including Contingency Plans. Air monitoring for asbestos, metals, dioxins and other organics, confined space entries, hot work permitting; respirator fit testing; and conducting varied health and safety meetings and site orientations were part of the many duties performed. Experience includes asbestos abatement, PCB spill cleanup and removal, varied hazardous wastes disposal, large inventories of drums and lab packs, underground storage tank (UST) removal, soil bioremediation, well development, and ground water monitoring and cleanup. 

1988. Safety Director and Plant Operator for the Electric Power Research Institute’s

(EPRI) Coal Quality Development Center in Homer City, PA. 

Safety Director - Developed Safety Program and conducted safety audits and safety meetings. Topics presented at the monthly safety meeting/training sessions included proper lifting techniques, fall protection, fire brigade training, electrical hazards, radiological exposure, electrical/ mechanical/ pneumatic, lockout procedures, hazardous material handling, oxyacetylene/welding, forklift/front end loader operation, conveyor belt safety, hoists/chainfalls/rigging procedures, first aid training, “HAZCOM” (worker “Right-To-Know”), toxicological effects of chemicals, dust hazards, chemical substance abuse, and employee attitude effects toward accident prevention. Responsibilities included administering all aspects of First Aid to plant and office personnel. Conducted preliminary design work on proof-of-concept process plant utilizing methylene chloride for coal/refuse separation. Developed safety procedures for plant layout and operation. 

Plant Operator - Responsible for total operation of plant, which included heavy media circuits, froth flotation, concentrating tables, centrifuges, belt filter presses, and other dewatering equipment, and maintenance of the facility. Wrote operating procedures. Operated front-end loader to load coal/refuse into dump trucks to transport to power plants. 

1981. STEARNS-ROGER, INC. (BI-GAS Pilot Coal Gasification Plant)


Chemical Operating Technician responsible for plant startup and monitoring of high pressure/temperature, entrained coal gasification facility. Advanced from a trainee to main control room operator of an advanced process of converting coal into methane utilizing an oxygen-blown gasifier/reactor, gas purification and sulfur removal units, and a fluidized bed catalytic converter. Much experience was gained operating support equipment such as steam generation units, multi-stage compressors and pumps, rod and ball mills, centrifuges, chillers, clarifiers, cooling towers, and cryogenic units. Trained new employees, inventoried chemical storage and fire systems, and assisted with fire brigade training/rescue drills. Unloaded coal from trucks and railroad cars. This position gave me a chemical engineering background that has benefited me throughout my career. 

1976. WESTMONT HILLTOP SCHOOL DISTRICT - Johnstown, PA

Taught high school Earth and Space, Environmental, and General Science.

Supervised laboratory exercises and maintained chemical storage room.
